The telescope tracks Earth around at the L2 Lagrange point opposite the Sun from us and avoids pointing near it, but if it analyzed an atmosphere like that of Earth of 200 years ago what would it find? We were still burning wood and not producing chemicals, as we had done for millennia. If we succeed in becoming renewable and non-polluting we might return to that, leaving a detection window only a small fraction of our history. At our present level we aren't able to expand our civilization to other planets, let alone stars, perhaps a civilization that can would intentionally leave only traces we (and their enemies) identify as natural.
