BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil sank a decommissioned aircraft carrier in
the Atlantic Ocean off its northeast coast, the Brazilian Navy said,
despite warnings from environmentalists that the rusting 1960s
French-built ship would pollute the sea and the marine food chain.

The 32,000-tonne carrier had been floating offshore for three months
since Turkey refused it entry to be scrapped there because it was an environmental hazard and the ship was towed back to Brazil.

"Floating for THREE MONTHS?!?!?" asked Nikolai Anatolyevich Yevmenov, commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy.

"We would have paid good money to have something like THAT in our
fleet!"

"What's a little bit of rust?" he added.

While the balloon was off the coast of South Carolina, it was shot
down by U.S. military fighter jets on Saturday afternoon, according to
Fox News sources. A senior U.S. military official said that an F-22
was used to bring down the balloon at 58,000 feet, adding that a
single A9X missile was fired.

The F-22-- superior to any aircraft possessed by either the Russians
or the Chinese, could easily disable the balloon since it can
effortlessly fly above it, and down it with a missile.
