I have seen articles in VW mags in the past where all you have to do is remove the vacuum slave unit, run a clutch cable to the tranny, hook it
up, and you have an outstanding 3 speed manual transmission! I have also talked to people who have done this and they say it works great! Also the three speed is a much friendly tranny in the bug anyway, with much nice
gear ratios than the original 4 speed manuals. : - )

I recognize this is many years after your original post. I am interested in this quasi approach to autostick conversion and am not able to find anything on the web about it besides this post. Can you please provide me with more information or reference
    articles? Thanks!

I found a very nice 1969 Beetle with an excellent

transmission. Does anyone know how hard is it to
install a manual transmission into the car? What is
needed and how much time is required? Thank you.

will find my list and post it for you if you reply

collectors will want it to stay original and think you destroy it by converting it. I drove mine for two years with matching vin numbers and the original engine, before I even knew it was a converted autostick!.The original pans did not have a clutch
tube for the clutch cable (gear-heads can weld one in) I have a list of what you need at home.My point of historical significance is who was the 1st So who ever one to do it!. In the 68 model year of the autostick it became the first ones in U.S.A. to
have I.R.S.(no clutch tube). So who ever converted that backbone (pan) to manual has the first original Standard Sedan (BUG/BEETLE) in U.S.A. with I.R.S.

The gear ratios in the semi-auto are the SAME as those used in the manual cars.

Low, D1 and D2 are the SAME gear ratios as 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the manual gearbox. 1st gear is missing in the semi-auto box as the torque converter takes it's place.

The early semi-autos, 68 to 71, used the 1200/1300 diff ratio though - 4.375 instead of the 1500/1600 manual's 4.125. Which means ALL the gear ratios are a fraction lower if you leave the semi-auto gearbox in place, though changing to the 4.125 ratio
diff is a straight swap in that box if preferred.
