    Yes the DTE uses the floater in the tank to measure the estimated remaining distance the vehicle can drive based off current speeds and driving conditions however the floater doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the tank it stops at around the 3
    gallon mark which eventhough the vehicle may register empty and still be driveable this is commonly referred to as the emergency reserve of the tank allowing drivers get to either safty or a fueling station even after the E and fuel light comes on this
    was installed on vehicles to help individuals who have to make trips with extensive gaps between fuelling stations like someone driving cross country or commuting for work over a great distance and also for those traveling and became lost or misguided
    and allowing for the car companies to show that they car about the health and well-being of there consumers.
