Troy Ruttmann
Youngest indy winner.
Troy Ruttman is the youngest Indianapolis 500 winner,
winning at the ages of 22 years and 80 days in 1952
True Legend
Born March 11, 1930
Mooreland, Oklahoma
Died May 19, 1997 (aged 67)
Cause of death Lung cancer
To give him his due: when he was in Europe in 1958 for the Monza Two
Worlds Race he elected to try his hand at Grand Prix racing in an old
Maserati 250F of Scuderia Centro-Sud and presumably not their best car
as these would have been allocated to their regular drivers. In the
French Grand Prix he drove a steady race, getting used to the car and a
new racing discipline, qualifying 19th, the slowest of the 7 Maseratis
and finishing 10th. He next elected to try the Nurburgring, of all races
to choose! Unfortunately the engine of his car failed during practice
and Centro Sud didn't have a spare so he never got to race.
With the current regulations this type of drive couldn't happen today.
"Ruttman won the 1956 USAC Short Track Stock Car division title. Ruttman
also competed in 7 races in the NASCAR Grand National Series from
1962–1964, finishing in the top ten 5 times. His best finish was third
at the 1963 race at Riverside International Raceway behind Dan Gurney
and A. J. Foyt." Dan Gurney won at Riverside five times.
