Romain's burns are worse than I thought but it's nice to see that
they're healing well

Are there questions to be asked about the quality of fireproofing his
gloves provided? Would seem that everywhere else he was fully covered,
but clearly the gloves didn't work as well as would be expected?

Duncan Smith F1’s gloves and boots are rated for 10 seconds in a 700°c high-octane petrol fire. Suits are rated for 20 - Romain was in the fire
for 28 seconds, so the extremities started to degrade leading to second
degree burns.

Duncan Smith exactly ! If he had of been in there any longer ... it
would of been an awful outcome

As an addendum - gloves and boots are only rated for 10 seconds because
the FIA conducts ‘extraction tests’ wherein a driver must exit the car within 10 seconds. However, due to the unusual nature of Romain’s crash
he was unable to extricate himself quickly enough underneath the ARMCO barriers.

Jasper Kilford Fair enough. Think there's always lessons to learn with
these things, always improving these kinds of products

Duncan Smith if they were made to late any longer than they did it would
be impractical, it'd be like trying to drive with boxing gloves on. He
tried a few times to get out so his hands would've been on the halo, in
the fire for a long time.

Mark Gerrard Yeah good point, guess there's a balance between
functionality and safety.

Duncan Smith another factor is that air acts as an insulator to an
extent. It appears his burns are centered to his knuckles and back of
hand where the material would compress as he was getting out

Drew Mitchell Glad all the other fire resistant clothing worked well.

Duncan Smith I'd say they did exactly what they were designed to do.
They're fire-resistant, and they didn't catch fire. Romain's burns were
caused by the intensity of the heat rather than direct contact with
flames. Nobody could say he didn't get off … See More
