Mike Obermaier I will never understand why BRM and Coventry Climax
didn't supercharge their fabulous little 1.5litre V8s for the advent of
the 3 litre formula....

Scott Delong I remember reading an interview w- Colin Chapman shortly
after the three litre formula was initiated. He predicted 1.5 litre
forced induction motors would predominate. Surprised it took so long!

Mike Obermaier Scott absolutely. I am not a motor engineer but I should
have thought that developing an existing excellent engine to take forced induction would have presented fewer problems and would have meant that
the Lotus and BRM teams would have been properly powered from the outset
of the 1966 season. It is interesting also to speculate whether there
would have been the legendary Cosworth DFV.

Mike Obermaier , I would suggest that it is not nearly as simple or
easy as you think. Taking "an existing excellent engine" and applying
forced induction to try to double it's power is impossible. Everything
about it's original design was to stand the stresses of original power. Everything would need to be redesigned.
To add to that, about a very similar effort, I good friend of mine
also races sports racers in the USA. He realized that by the SCCA rules
for DSR in mid 2000s, it allowed 1,000 cc normally aspirated, OR 666 cc
forced induction, and he (and many other…See More

Here is some other discussion on the subject, In 1966, "Compression
devices were allowed for the first time since 1960, but it wasn't until
1977 that a company actually had the finance and interest of building
one, when Renault debuted their new Gordini V6 Turbo at the British
Grand Prix at Silverstone that year." And it took many years to get
reliable. From:
