Even so, you have to wonder if people on the front row were cleaning carbon fiber bits out of their teeth.

Begs another question however - why is there a gap between the barrier and the fence? I've not noticed that elsewhere but haven't really looked for it.
It seems like a bit of a deathtrap. If there had been a fire...

I think the gap makes sense...but I wouldn't make it almost precisely
the height of an F1 car such that it can be wedged in like that. I would
have thought that having a wider gap would have been better for where it
came to rest, extracting the driver and for fighting fires.

I wondered about that. It probably helped that the grandstands are
elevated - anything that went straight through the (vertical portion of
the) catch fence would have hit the metal facing below the exposed
    spectators in the front row.

Presumably to permit the tire barrier to "give" more by moving into the gap.

but I wouldn't make it almost precisely

Larger would be better, although movement of the tire barrier would
reduce the gap during an actual crash.

Yes, but if you look the barrier is held back by Armco which limits how
far it can move. Even with significant impacts, several layers of tyres
should absorb enough that the Armco doesn't move and reduce that gap in
    most cases.

There is another video floating around (I think on Peter Windsor's twitter feed) from a couple of rows back that shows people in the front row ducking down below the facing as Zhou's car hits. It was taken by a 13-year old who was either very brave or
    just didn't understand the danger.

As we see more video, it is apparent that this could have been very tragic for both Zhou and the fans.

It really is amazing how far safety has progressed in motorsport.

good call on the distance but I would suggest 1.5 - 2 times car WIDTH, so
a reasonable amount of access to a car in almost any position (falt , on
    its side, upside down etc.
