• 4th "power units"

From XYXPDQ@21:1/5 to All on Thu Sep 16 11:45:58 2021
Which drivers are likely to take penalty for using a fourth "power unit"?

Max has to and I think Lewis will. Anyone else?

Now *that* would be interesting if penalties taken in the same race !

    Or brief.

I blieve I read that Max would take his penalty at the next race, since
he has a three place grid penalty already. This slightly mitigates the
    engine penalty.

I would not -- if I were in charge, which I obviously not -- do an
engine change for Lewis at the same event. But cannier people than I
work for the Mercedes team, so who's to know how it will turn out?

Wolff claims that Lewis' power unit is still in good shape and that he
might not need to take the penalty for a 4th at all.

Or maybe he's just being canny, saying this to sow uncertainty at Red Bull.

Everyone has already used three of most of their PU elements, with Perez
& Bottas already penalised for using their fourth elements - BOT took
    the penalties at Monza.

All drivers have used three ICEs, TCs & MGU-Hs, but RIC, STR, LEC, SAI,
RAI, GIO, MAZ, MSC, RUS & LAT are still on their 2nd.

All drivers have used two ES' & CEs - I think that is the max allowed.

Exhaust systems (EX) were recently added to the list of restricted
elements, with a limit of 8 per season. Ocon has already used 8, but
everyone else is safe enough - Alonso is on 7 & Perez 6.

Usually FIA doc. #4 lists the situation at the start of each event,
with any additional changes published during events.

Perhaps the most important thing is when they each started using their
third elements. I'd have to check on that.

Note that the FIA docs. include 'changes in Parc Ferme' where late
element changes appear rather than in a separate document.

There have been several element changes where the newly installed
element is marked as 'previously used'. I noted that Hamilton
had used his 3rd elements at Spa, but reverted to previously
used once for the 'race'. So his 'new' elements had very little
    running at that event.

Most drivers received their 2nd PU elements (the main 4) at Baku,
and their 3rd ones at Spa - every 6 Events. In normal usage they
could anticipate needing to use 4th elements after Event 18 (Mexico),
though it also depends on the distance they have covered up to that
    point.

Gearbox penalties are also possible, but less predictable.
