I am not so sure it is simple NASCAR "mismanagement".
I've been involved in amateur road racing since 1969,
and a large part of the problem is just plain changing
demographics, and finances.
Youth are more interested in video games, and drifting,
and racing their fairly inexpensive street cars
(CHUMP Cars, LEMONS, NASA etc.).
When young, I'd have loved to help an experienced racer
with his car prep, and helping at a track. Now it
is real tough to even get them to come to a track
an try spectating once.
Many of us had heroes, like Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti,
but youth now does not feel that way.
and it has brought ALL FORMS of motorsports in the US down with it.
Like it or not the thing that Indy Car and other forms of racing needs
more than anything else right now is a healthy NASCAR Cup series.
Yes, that would help, but IMHO it is unlikely to ever
get back to the very high media ratings they used to have.
When it is drawing it's high 4s and low 5 for TV ratings it keep the focus on US motorsports in general. When fans began turning away from NASCAR they turned away from motorsports in general and took up other activities.
