Okay, I know this is a dumb question, but it's been nagging at me for
years. Can anybody tell me how "piezo" is pronounced in its original language? I know, of course, that virtually every American musician pronounces it "pie - zo," and so that's how I say it, by default.
But it doesn't look like an English word to me. In Italian, it'd be "pee
    - ay - tso," for example.
So, does anybody know the history of this word (i.e. in what language it originated), or some "official" pronunciation? Of course, it's useless knowledge to the well-adjusted, but it's making me crazy so please help if you can. I can't sleep ...

    Hi David.
It's my understanding that the proper pronuncation is "pee-AY-tso".
While we're on the subject, how do you pronounce "DEMETER" ?
    Anybody know ?
    Dave Peck
Sorry Oklahoma Dave, I am an America Guitarist and I do not know ANYONE who would use Pie-Zo.
    It is of, course Pee-eh-zo

Yeah, "pee-EIGHTS-oh" or "pee-AY-tzo" is proper, but it seems that
only really pompous persons bother. Most engineers seem to say
"PEE-zo" or "PIE-zo," and I've heard all three pronunciations used at
    AES presentations.

    'Pompous' Hmmm...
Pie-zo sounds it comes from someone that repeated the 4th grade because their teacher was was either a feminist studies or ethnic studies major.

AFAIK this word stems from Old Greek "πιέζειν" = to press.

Therefore (according to the original pronounciation) "Piezo" could be pronounced as follows:

    p
    i like in "m_i_ller"
    e like in "g_e_t"
    ts
    o like in "g_o_"

Never heard that one. I'm in the 'pee-ay-zo' camp (US).

It's been pee-ay-zo since I became enamored of sound in the 1950s. Cambridge Dictionary says that's the U.S. version, the U.K. likes pee-zo.
