• Can we get a moderator to filter the spam

From none one@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jan 27 08:31:58 2023
I used to frequent RAP for many years and learned a lot from reading here. It is a shame what it has become, and the rest of usenet as well. It seems moderation is needed to get rid of the spam. I see some of the old time regulars are still here. Is
there a way we can set up this group with a moderator to get rid of the spam? I would be happy to be one of the moderators if that would help.

Generally usenet is unmoderated, though there are a few moderated groups.

To avoid the spam, most of it can be eliminated by using a kill file on
your machine, as long as you are using a real news reader. Most of the
current drug related spam is from a single user.

You can also elect to use a server which runs the Cleanfeed program

    http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/cleanfeed/

Many users appreciate the freedom of usenet though.

If you want moderation, then there are moderated groups on Facebook as
well as a number of moderated boards if you search. A lot of the former
regular users do most of their interaction that way, and lurk here.

There is no moderator. There are moderated Usenet groups, but they have
to be set up that way at the onset. You can't turn an unmoderated group
into a moderated group, as far as I know.

The spam and trolling (Weeds coming up through the cracks)is the main
reason people have disappeared from usenet, and as there's no way to
charge users, nobody can afford to spend time to moderate a group.

I am an admin on a facebook grip, and dealing with spammers is easy. We
control entry to the group, and if a member sends spam, we chuck them
out. That is impossible on usenet.

I don't see any spam. Get your news provider to run cleanfeed (or just have them dump everything from Google Groups, which a lot of news servers do still) and you won't see any spam either. All of the spam comes from the badly managed server at Google and it all has very easy signatures for news admins
    to filter on.
