Thanks Scott, for thinking of me. I agree with Geoff, it resembles an AKG C535 ... at least the head. That mic's electronics are in the part that would have been 'sawn-off'! It's not a prop, here's the 'full' version on the Andy Williams show. https:/
/www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0EBs6uRgtw . Williams intros the number, holding it and talking. Now, this could have been picked on the boom mic, just to fool us. However, Hatfield's performance differs slightly from the commercial recording and the show's
orchestra certainly could have played it.

I'm still in touch with a friend who worked at NBC Burbank in that era. I'll ask him if he knows, and get back to the thread with his response.

    In this:

    1. You can see him pick the microphone up and see it removed from the clip.
    2. It is identified as the Andy Williams show.

That's the "full version" clip I mentioned. While I await input from my "NBC Friend", here's another thought:

The Andy Willams show was mixed by Bill Cole, a knowledgeable and innovative Engineer. He introduced the "Hurdy Gurdy Speaker" ... a small box with shoulder straps that could b deployed "as close as possible" to feed the orchestra or playback to a
performer singing on a boom mic. He might have asked the folks in the audio shop to modify an AKG C-535 by replicating the electronics in a smaller form to allow shortening the handle. Here's what's inside: https://www.gennlab.com/15_AKG_C535EB_
Amplifier.jpg. The cable looks thinner and appears to come out of the mic with no connector. Also, it certainly was not a prop. Hatfield altered the lyrics, the piano was weak, the strings were more present and there's a guitar playing some pleasant
figures, not heard in the original track.

I saw my NBC friend at a retiree's luncheon this week. He didn't know the mic, but said that Cole wouldn't have thought twice about asking the the Audio Maintenance shop to perform the modification. He agreed that Williams might have said "I don't want
that 'thing' sticking out the bottom of my hand".

    Merry Christmas to all!

Okay, a friend identified it, and we're all kind of right and kind of wrong.

It's an Altec lipstick mike with an AKG grille attached to it. The cable and the clip are the giveaways that it's an Altec!
