• Is this group officially dead?

From Ralph Barone@21:1/5 to All on Sun Dec 4 22:51:14 2022
There has been no in-topic activity for quite some time, and a band of drug dealers has moved into the neighbourhood. Is it safe to say that this group
is now officially dead? If so, I’d like to say thank you to all the knowledgeable posters over the years for their education and entertainment.

And suggestions as to where else to go ? Preferably with a compact
    USENET-like layout.

... although the druggie stuff seems to have slowed down, today at least.

    Certainly not dead, yet!

But you can blame so-called 'social' media (Farcebook, Shitter, et al) for the rapid
decline in traffic on Usenet and Usenet Groups.

And the corresponding 'cropping up of weeds'(the aforementioned drug-hawkers) through the
cracks in the pavement, arund here.

If you ask a question, you can still get a meaningful answer.

Ask whether 96k sounds better than 44.1k, and the graves will open.

SFAIK, Reddit stands as the Usenet replacement although it
has strong preferences for some fairly immature tropes.

I've no idea how any of that works as a company.

Usenet would be a vast improvement over all online social

    _____________

    I never presumed anything.

Online correspondents, and internet users in general, have become attracted toward the visually appealing
'social media' networks, and away from the staid, boring-looking conversation groups available on UseNet,
    etc.

Those social sites appeal more to emotion than they do to topicality, or to the impart of actual knowledge.
The percentage of the likes of Michael Rivers and Scott Dorsey are much lower on a Farcebook audio group
than they are on here, or a moderated pro audio forum such as GearSpace. Which, by the way, at least tried to
differentiate themself from the social media slime by changing the forum name from 'GearSlutz', in order to
appeal to a more diverse membership-base.

As those legitimate users migrate, they are replaced by, as I referred to them, the 'weeds though the cracks
in the pavement' - the spammers and scammers.

Ever see an abandoned property, or a house that hasn't sold after six or more months on the market? The grass,
a foot tall, cracks in the driveway, the north facing exterior, covered in green moss.

I'm afraid that's the fate of many a Usenet group, or private moderated subject group, with the likes of Shitter
Farcebook, and PrickTock maintaining their popularity.

And nobody's paying anyone for this to happen. It's happening naturally, like dust accumulating on tops of
furniture and window sills. Although, those social sites do seem to attract a lot more ads than we see here
    in Usenet groups.

The web based social media sites are paid for by the adverts. On
Facebook, Twitter and suchlike, you are not the customer, you are the
    product.

It is not practical to charge for adverts due to the way that usenet
works. There is a relatively new nand growing platform called Mastodon
which is paid for by subscription or donations, which uses a similar distributed hosting arrangement to the one that usenet has.

Many usenet servers also run the Cleanfeed program, which stops adverts
in their tracks, and that is part of what my ten Euros a year
