A die-hard Deadpool fan named Andrew Stege has created a change.org
petition asking Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels and NBC to let
Ryan Reynolds host the show in character as the foul-mouthed superhero.
"How would this not be hilarious having Deadpool in sketches, breaking
the 4th wall, and inserting some of his brand of humor (obviously toned
down a bit for network television)!?!?!" Stege writes by way of
justification.
"I have not watched a full episode of SNL in years because I just
haven't been able to stomach an entire episode, but having Deadpool
host, star, and be all over the episode would get the DVR set so I can
watch it again and again!!!" he adds.
SNL has not commented on the petition, which had more than 52,000
supporters as of Friday morning
Deadpool, which shattered box office records in its opening weekend,
has become a much bigger hit than expected, especially with young men,
SNL's target demographic.
But no actor has ever hosted an entire episode as a fictional character
in SNL's 41-year history. That seems unlikely to change, as
NBCUniversal is not going to promote rival studios' property without compensation (Deadpool is produced by Marvel and 20th Century Fox). Nor
does it seem likely that Michaels would agree to allow an entire
episode of SNL to be sponsored content.
Still, this wouldn't be the first time someone landed an SNL hosting
gig following a grassroots movement by fans. Betty White emceed the
Mother's Day episode of the show in 2010 after more than 500,000 people
liked a Facebook page calling for her to host. (More recently, several petitions to block Donald Trump from hosting an episode of SNL earlier
this season failed to make an impact, despite gathering hundreds of
thousands of signatures.)
