Originally scheduled for a theatrical release, the film is now
slated for a Disney+ premiere on Friday, June 18, with no extra
fee, as a special offering to kick-off the summer season.
However, it is still expected to arrive in international
theaters where Disney+ isn't available yet.
Luca will tell a fun and heartwarming story about friendship and
stepping out of your comfort zone with two teenage sea monsters
who experience a life-changing summer. Set in a beautiful
seaside town on the Italian Riviera, this coming-of-age adventure
centers around one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer
filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares
these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun
is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from
another world just below the water's surface.
The animated film will be led by Jacob Tremblay (Room, The Little
Mermaid) as Luca Paguro, a bright and inventive 13-year-old sea
monster with endless curiosity-especially when it comes to the
mysterious world above the sea; Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam!) as
Alberto Scorfano, an independent, free-spirited teenage sea
monster with unbridled enthusiasm for the human world.; and Emma
Berman as Giulia, an outgoing and charming adventurer who
befriends Luca and Alberto.
It will also feature the voices of Maya Rudolph (Big Hero 6, The
Willoughbys) as Luca's mother Daniela, Marco Barricelli as
Giulia's father Massimo, and Jim Gaffigan as Luca's father's
Lorenzo.
Luca is directed by Italian filmmaker Enrico Casarosa in his
feature-length directorial debut with Andrea Warren (Lava, Cars 3)
set as a producer. Casarosa, who has worked on iconic animated
films such as Cars, Ratatouille, Up, The Good Dinosaur, Coco and
Incredibles 2, has been with Pixar since 2006 as a storyboard
artist and writer.
