I finally got around to watching Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 animated romantic fantasy movie “Kimi no Na Wa”/”Your Name”. This very successful and award winning film feels like a sort of witty, compassionate and sweet blend of “The Girl Who Jumped
Through Time” and Longfellow’s “Evangeline”. Two teens, one girl and one boy, who live very different lives in very different parts of Japan start to find themselves swapping bodies on a random basis. They will wake up in the other’s body in
the morning, and then find themselves back in their own bodies the next morning when they wake up again. They can’t communicate directly with each other but they do leave short notes and comments in order to keep each other from messing up their lives
too badly. Eventually they both independently decide that they want to meet the other person.

The animation in the film is spectacularly good. It’s up to the standards of the best of Studio Ghibli. The dialog and voice acting are both up to the challenge of competing with that animation. The writing is sharp and well controlled. All-in-all the
film is wonderful cinematic adventure. I recommend it highly and my final rating is a solid A. If you get a chance watch this movie.
