I just watched the first six episodes of the new Trigger original anime “BNA”, aka, “Brand New Animal”. It’s a flashy fantasy of a world where Beast People have come out of hiding and are living in an uneasy relationship with Humanity. Most
Beast People live in their own city on an island offshore of Japan. Many humans don’t like Beast People and hunt them down when they find them on Human territory.

As the story starts a young tanuki girl named Michiru attempts to reach the Beast Man City. But Michiru isn’t a normal Beast Girl – she is a human who suddenly transformed into a Beast Girl a year before. Michiru reaches the Beast City but she soon
finds out that it isn’t the paradise that she expected. While in the midst of multiple jams Michiru runs into a mysterious Wolf Man and is taken in by a group of Beast People who are connected to the Mayor of the Beast City. Michiru wants to find a
cure for her “Beast Sickness” and also starts to exhibit strange powers beyond those normally found in Beast People.

As I wrote above, “BNA” has lots of very flashy and colourful animation as one would expect from Trigger. The anime also has a lot of painfully unsubtle writing, particularly in the first episode which is a real challenge to get through without
dropping it in disgust. The writing does settle down in the subsequent episodes although it continues to be simple minded and at times heavy handed. But enough mysteries are popping up to get me to continue to watch it.

The first six episodes were broadcast in a bunch a couple of weeks ago. The rest of the anime will start in April. I’ll keep watching it for now to see if the writing continues to improve beyond where it currently stands. My initial rating after the
    first six episodes is C+.
