    This reads like a Classic Comics version of Genji Monogatari.
    Lots of notes explaining the Heian Kyo period, dress and manners. Full color.
    Seems like it might be a School book translated to manga.

    If you have not read Murasaki Shikibu's 1000 year old
    masterpiece this might be a good introduction. All the student
    in Japan have to study/read Genji Monogatari.
    Occasionally in Shojo works one of the girls will
    comment on how Prince Genji was not a nice man.

    The book would bring us to the vivid world of Heian Imperial Court
    that was lost very long time ago.

    In Japan's high school, students read only first several pages of
    "Genji Monogatari". I've never read the book further. Murasaki Shikibu
    wrote the book 1,000 years ago. It's difficult to read. First, there
    are big differencies in language and culture of contemporay Japan and
    of Genji's world. Second, it's very long and complex. Likes of
    Dostoyevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov". Although there are many
    translations in comtemporary Japanese, I'd prefer to original if I can.

    I think you meant Classics Illustrated.

    I have never actually read the whole thing but there have been numerous
    manga adaptation of the story.

    In one of the volumes, なめこ文学全集 summarized the story very concisely. The
    bonus is the every character is drawn as a mushroom.

    The book is rather raunchy with his sleeping around all over the place.

    There was a part about Genji finding a toddler girl that he fell in love
    with so he adopted her and groomed her to (eventually) be his wife. Rather illegal these days.
