I think the deal is while he can't make and real changes to the
status quo (Olive's new spirit medium powers notwithstanding. SHe's
had powers before), he and Shadia Amin are given freedom with the
more obscure Thimble Theater characters (like basically turning
Castor's long-absent wife Cylinda in Whilemina from "OK, KO!" and
giving Whaler Joe a daughter [and a face]).

Well, the two main Katzenjammer Kids were pretty clear, so I figured the third one was just a kid who got dropped from that strip or something.
Someone replying on Randy's facebook recognized Lil' Iodine, the birthday
girl in the trip.

Back in October, every non-generic Halloween costume worn by the kids
was a King Features character. So, yeah, Randy has been given the keys to
the toybox, as long as he doesn't break anything.

Dave Van Domelen, notes Randy was basically a Thimble Theater scholar (hobbyist level) before he got the gig.

A) Little Iodine has appeared in a recent KF strip—maybe it was even
this one. In the meantime, her eponymous strip is carried as “Vintage”
by CK.

B) There were originally three Katzenjammers, but they were so different
from the two I remember going back to the 50s, that it’s impossible to
say which is which. (They actually look more like Wilhelm Busch’s Max
and Moritz than like the eventual Hans and Fritz.) The odd character
might be the third brother, or, for all I can tell, he could be Rollo
with his hair colored wrong.
