• SW10/WWW: Powernaut 1995 #21: Then My Work Here is Done! (tm)

From Scott Eiler@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jan 4 01:56:25 2024
... Well, sort of, Powernaut. But you're about to get a Quest! For
everyone else in the episode, the time has come for the three little
words every character loves to hear: TO BE CONCLUDED! (Probably next
    week!)

    http://eilertech.com/stories/powernaut/1995b.htm#21

This week... Powernaut Comics used to be simpler, when Powernauts got
to beat up Adolf Hitler instead of Saddam Hussein. So for this one,
    we're trying panel-level commentary!

    ...

Bonus Section: 2005 Reprint Commentary from Wyatt Ferguson! Panel by Panel!

People often critique later-period Powernaut Comics as being difficult
to understand because they're so dense with artistic clues instead of explanatory dialogue. So as the episode finally nears its end, let's try
a strip's worth of commentary - panel by panel!

    1. Megaphone just slugged the Powernaut, who is lying on the ground. Megaphone is of course gloating. The Powernaut is of course having
nothing more to do with this fight. (If they did continue, it would be
on roughly equal terms, only Megaphone is a much better boxer.)

    2. Sorting things out.
Upper: Crusher Joe escorts Megaphone away, almost tenderly.
Megaphone literally has no place to go except back to Total Conversion
    HQ in the Bahamas.
Lower: The Powernaut is thinking, "I don't let people get hurt
    - especially not myself!" He's shown a healing touch before, in 1987.
And Leo reveals the existence of a Time Police force, from whose far
future Megaphone came from, in search of 1990s adventure. Megaphone
never admitted *how* far his future is, but it's at least well beyond 2005.

    3. Cleanup. Apparently Total Conversion is taking custody of the
junior alien of the invaders! The other aliens have either died or fled.
And the guy from Hypergaard is proud to be helping, and even taking
charge. (Note how he has actual color to his skin when the rest of us
don't. It's an effect of his being 4-dimensional.)

    4. "Then My Work Here is Done!" TM - It seems Powernaut Comics is
trying to trademark that phrase from the 1988 comic! Total Conversion
(the superhero team on premises) is saying Yeesh. But Leo is such a
fanboy as he starts his career, that he's impressed.

    5. Racer Girl is impatient that the Powernaut has been interfering
with our mission to rescue the Powernaut. Go figure. The Mad Axeman from Shenandoah and I were still waiting there to watch. (Racer Girl is from 4-dimensional Hypergaard and has actual color to her skin.)

    6. The Powernaut had been recreated from fragments of himself. He has
sensed that his ladyfriend Paula Page will have to be recreated likewise.

    7. As the Hypernaut comes back from the flooding platform, Racer Girl
tells the Powernaut that recreating Paula will not be that easy.

I have to agree with it being confusing, but that could just be from not following from the beginning.

    1.    Megaphone just slugged the Powernaut, who is lying on the ground. Megaphone is of course gloating. The Powernaut is of course having
nothing more to do with this fight. (If they did continue, it would be

So wait, was this drawn in 95 or 24? Did the characters travel back to 95?

I don't think that you can trademark a phrase like that lol

No, it's not just you. My sister was following Powernaut Comics near
the beginning, but she now finds them bewildering. (In fairness, she
found the Barbie movie bewildering also. 8{D> ) Among the general
public, comic book fans tend to get Powernaut Comics; normal people, not
    so much.

It's even more complicated than you think... In-universe, it was drawn

You can always try! Mickey Mouse may be public domain now, but he's
still under trademark. And I've seen old Star Wars ads with "May the

Oh, my, this one's so complicated, it needs a visual aid. Welcome to
Fractal Time! (Scroll down from the cartoon to see Ununillium's
original question and the answer from Powernaut Comics 2005, originally published in the Real World in 2012.)

    http://eilertech.com/stories/powernaut/2005.htm#3

    - We live in a universe in which people may dress up as Powernauts, but Powernauts with powers don't exist. I get to publish Powernaut Comics here.

    - Powernaut Comics are originally published in a universe where
Powernauts have existed but some of their adventures are fictional, and commentators have always had to sort out the details.

    - Powernauts actually exist in Fractal Time, in which their timeline
sometimes goes off at right angles to reality, and it's always subject
to change. In that timeline, any Powernaut story is true for them. But
any adventures with Powernauts in them may differ from original stories.
Usually those changes are for the better, in my modern-day opinion.

Back in the Real World, I have some stories from before I published
Powernauts. I have changed many details in those over the years, based
on who the main characters are. Maximum Extremity has had three sets of
main characters over the years: Total Conversion, Wyatt Ferguson, and
now the Powernaut. So it has three versions. I now consider the
version with Powernauts to be definitive.

... Uh, hope this helps! 8{D>

heh, let's go with the simpler explanation then. Reality Shifts. Lots
    of Reality Shifts.

    http://eilertech.com/stories/powernaut/2009.htm#3 has an explanation of
Legion of Net.Heroes retroactive continuity, in terms Powernaut readers
    can understand...

Doc Nostalgia (Golden and Modern age LNH superhero): err... When the
    Killfile lifted, it changed me!

    Interviewer: When the What What?

    Doc Nostalgia: Reality shift.

    Interviewer: Got it.

... That said, thank you for your interest. You've engaged with other
people's content on RACC more than anyone else in the last five years!

So wait, was this drawn in 95 or 24? Did the characters travel back

It's even more complicated than you think...  In-universe, it was
drawn in and characters come from '95 (and reprinted in '05, hence
the reprint commentary).  In the real world, drawn in '23 (hence the
copyright notice) and published in '24.

(wait theres a comic series in universe that the characters read and
also the "actual" comic takes place in 2005? or)

Oh, my, this one's so complicated, it needs a visual aid.  Welcome to Fractal Time!  (Scroll down from the cartoon to see Ununillium's
original question and the answer from Powernaut Comics 2005, originally published in the Real World in 2012.)

    -  We live in a universe in which people may dress up as Powernauts, but Powernauts with powers don't exist.  I get to publish Powernaut Comics
    here.

    -  Powernaut Comics are originally published in a universe where
Powernauts have existed but some of their adventures are fictional, and commentators have always had to sort out the details.

    -  Powernauts actually exist in Fractal Time, in which their timeline sometimes goes off at right angles to reality, and it's always subject
to change.  In that timeline, any Powernaut story is true for them.  But any adventures with Powernauts in them may differ from original stories.
Usually those changes are for the better, in my modern-day opinion.

Back in the Real World, I have some stories from before I published Powernauts.  I have changed many details in those over the years, based
on who the main characters are.  Maximum Extremity has had three sets of main characters over the years:  Total Conversion, Wyatt Ferguson, and
now the Powernaut.  So it has three versions.  I now consider the
version with Powernauts to be definitive.

... Uh, hope this helps!  8{D>

Oh, and if a story *says* it's happening in 1995, it's happening with characters which somehow exist in 1995, and their origin is not
important to the story unless the story mentions it! (The aftermath of Megaphone: The End may be an awkward time to mention this, but oh well.)
