    Also if drilling it out make sure to set your material on top of a piece of scrap or you will get tons or chip out

    Hey 1/4 inch thick piece of walnut. I prefer the darker stuff. Get a drill press or use somebody elses. Get your self some tappered plug cutters of your desired size. Cut four plugs out. Glue two pieces together like a taperred plug. Do some sanding.
    Sand to 220 if you are going to use a finish. I use beeswax or mineral oil. You just wipe it on and let dry over night. Do that till you are happy. If you dont want to apply finish you can sand them beyond 220 and that will begin to close the pores to
    the point that it wont absorb any finish. Good luck. Ps i think you can actually get hard wood dowels such as walnut maple cherry and oak. Check it out and have fun
