I remember reading stories of the Silver / Bronze Age Superman being
able to travel in time. Even as Superboy he could do that. That's how he
could be part of the Legion.

But was he able to travel to other universes or alternate timelines as
well purely using his own power? My memory is a bit fuzzy on that.

While I do not remember Superman being able to move "sideways" in time,
do his visits to Earth-2 count?

At the beginning of the JLA/JSA teamups, it was established that it was
easier to cross from E-1 to E-2, or vice versa, during a certain period
in the summer, which is when those 2-parters were published, and when
kids had more time to buy and read comics! I had more lawns to mow then,
and more tips from being an altar boy at weddings!

The Flashes could vibrate across just about any old time, the GLs could
have the rings send them there, or to the alternate universe where Qward
was (the Weaponers' planet.) The Supermen could crack the dimensional
barriers with their speed, and I remember an aside that they learned
the vibrating trick from the Flashes.

Supes passed through a solid wall on the `50s TV show, but he didn't
do that in the comics, that I remember.

If so I'd say it counts.

Do you remember specific stories of Supes doing that?

    Actually he did.
I remember a story in the 70s, in Batman, in which Bruce was held
prisoner. The guard was Superman in disguise and he phased through walls
like a phantom. This puzzled Batman.
If memory serves Batman had been poisoned and they needed to keep him
anxious to slow down that poison. Something like that.

Superman also used that trick of phasing in an episode of 'Lois and Clark'.
