Well, that was a bit of a let-down...
Everyone dies... then they don't.
The powerful God of Death is defeated in five minutes... by a
spoon and tow rope!
Bringing death to death = Life. (Huh?)
Ruby finds her mother... and she's normal!!! (Well, there's
always a twist at the end, right?)
Ruby says goodbye... but appears in a 'Sneak Peek' for a future
episode in last night's "Doctor Who:Unleashed".
Mrs Flood breaks the Fourth Wall, again.
All in all, a typical RTD season finale. Nothing makes a lot of
sense and the big bad is defeated very quickly after a big build
up, leaving more time for family chit-chat and tearful emotional
goodbyes of course.
Thankfully, based on previous experience my expectations weren't
too high for this episode... just as well, as for me it's RTD's
worst season finale! I could say a lot more, good and bad, but
it's "Doctor Who" not a science documentary. It looked good, and
Ncuti was on top form, but think about the plot too much and
you'll be scratching your head for the rest of the day.
Clearly there are still questions left to be answered after this
season... Mrs Flood, the snow (etc.) plus we all know Ruby's
story hasn't been fully told yet...
Looking back I've probably overrated a couple of episodes and I
will amend them at some stage now that I can view S1/S14 as a
whole... so bearing in mind that, "Empire of Death" gets a 5/10
from me.

Lame though. And what about the snow? They forgot about that.
They could’ve added a quick line that the snow is probably a
lingering side effect of the paradox when the goblins took baby
Ruby. That would’ve worked.
And the explanation for the pointing made no sense at all.
In my personal headcanon, the Doctor was mistaken. She was
pointing past him but not to the lamppost. It was to the church
hoping he would go there and find the baby. (After all, she
didn’t know when the vicar would look out, so might as well
let someone else know too.)
Mrs Flood breaks the Fourth Wall, again.
She said the Doctor is a clever boy. So she's Clara, but didn't

Maybe one of Clara’s duplicate fragments. (That would also
explain how she aged, which Clara can’t do any more.)
Didn't the Doctor forget about Clara, or Clara about the Doctor, or
something?
He forgot about her, but recovered his memories later.
Didn't she whizz off with someone in someone else's TARDIS?
With the immortal Ashildr in a TARDIS that looks like an American
diner.

spoon and tow rope!
Bringing death to death = Life. (Huh?)
Double negative: a negative times a negative has a positive product.
That's the RTD logic anyway. Still doesn't make much sense, but, hey,
we've got to have a happy ending here...otherwise the next season would
be rather boring with nothing going on outside the TARDIS.
Thankfully, based on previous experience my expectations weren't
too high for this episode... just as well, as for me it's RTD's

Some of my thoughts. Ncuti overall wasn't bad. At the beginning of the >season it looked to me like he had drunk way too many cups of coffee,
and was amped up on caffeine. Fortunately they switched him to decaf by
the third story. Another criticism I would have is that the Doctor was >over-emotional throughout the season. I'm not saying that the Doctor
should be an uncaring iceberg, but he cried and/or yelled in almost
every episode...to the point where it became formulaic: you knew that
at a specific point in (almost) every story, the Doctor would cry and
yell. Overusing that over the course of the season made the primal howl
he gave in Empire of Death a LOT LESS effective as a dramatic
element...we had seen it several times over by then.
Another criticism I have is a carry-over from last week's Part 1. There
were two members of UNIT, can't remember their names at the moment, that
last week contributed so little to the plot, that I was questioning why
they were there in the first place. Their lines and actions could have >easily been given to another character, and the scenes would have been
just as effective. Since the season finale was a two-parter, I wanted
to wait to see what these two UNIT members did in Part 2 before
commenting. Well, this week they contributed /even/ /less/ to the plot
than they did last week....aside from contributing to the death count.
Why were they there?
Looking back I've probably overrated a couple of episodes and I
will amend them at some stage now that I can view S1/S14 as a
whole... so bearing in mind that, "Empire of Death" gets a 5/10
from me.
The season started off very poorly. If they had not done the first two >stories, started with #3 and stuck two other stories in there somewhere,
the season would have been much stronger overall; it had been slowly
gaining momentum from the 4th story...until Empire of Death...then it >stripped third gear. I question why the BBC and Disney chose to release
the season in May and June. Those are the two months that start the
summer holiday season in the Northern Hemisphere, and a lot of people
would be on holiday, or otherwise "touching grass" (without being told), >instead of watching something through traditional broadcast or >streaming...simply because the weather is better with more daylight
hours to do things outside (in fact, wasn't "well, it was a nice day"
used as an excuse for the low overnight ratings for Devil's Chord?).
That's the reason show seasons traditionally run from September to the >beginning of May...the greater occurrence of inclement weather forces
people to be inside...you have a captive audience.
Empire gets a 5/10 from me as well. As I said above: didn't suck, but
wasn't fantastic either. Overall the season gets a 6.5/10 from me.

cheap cheat. That said, it was still entertaining,
well directed and oozed production quality.
The show is the best it has ever looked.
But RTD is losing his touch.

Looking back I've probably overrated a couple of episodes and I
will amend them at some stage now that I can view S1/S14 as a
whole... so bearing in mind that, "Empire of Death" gets a *5/10*
from me.
So out of 10 ?

I don’t normally do marks out of 10. If I did, I would
probably give it something around 7/10. But I don’t, so
I’ll just say that it’s more like a guilty pleasure than a
genuinely great episode.
More towards 5 for the radw average.
I guess I’m just more tolerant of episodes that have lots of
good moments that don’t come together to make a good plot.
To be fair, most Doctor Who fans have had to be somewhat
tolerant of that sort of thing... as it's been quite a common
event over the years!
Like I said, they’re my guilty pleasure.
In the modern world I think "Doctor Who" should be everyone's
guilty pleasure!

RTD was always going to do what he does best... nothing about
S1/S14 has been a surprise from that POV. He is a better
Producer than writer of "Doctor Who" (IMO). Two of the better
stories from this season were not even written by RTD. So no
surprise there.
I partly guessed the finale would be a damp squib after the
build-up the previous week. It's what RTD does... but this
season of "Doctor Who" has still been more entertaining than the
last couple of seasons under Chris Chibnall.
