Although technically a fantasy novel, from your review it's clear that
the book's objectives and strengths are those of mainstream fiction,
so I find it not at all surprising that it has won a mainstream award
and yet done poorly among fantasy genre readers.
It's not the sort of book they're looking for, even though it is a very
    good book.
Offhand, I can't think of a similar example in the field of science
fiction, even though there are well-known books and authors that
had some tendency in that direction.
