I keep hearing that USENET itself is dead at the hands of spammers and
trolls. Sounds like a self-fulfilling prophecy that could be averted if
a sufficient number of determined people were determined to do so, so
maybe echometerain should post on rec.arts.sf.composition anyway.

@echometerain, if you post this in the appropriate newsgroup I'll give

    I resemble that remark :-)

Reddit has some problems. It's a commercial venture now, so it is ad supported, and the management is more interested in making it IPO worthy than in serving the user base.

The biggest problem for me is that threads age out and vanish quickly. Here, most clients present threads by latest update, regardless of how old. On rassf
and rasfw, we've had single threads stay on the front page for months, and accumulate tens of thousands of contributions.

On Reddit, such long discussions are almost impossible. You can't sort on most recently updated, and any given thread is dead in a day or two.

Long ago there was a useful low traffic group called sci.physics.electromagnetism,
where you could post your questions about octagonal wave guides.

Then someone put it on a crosspost from various nutbar groups with the
question "Can we do anything about gravity?", and that was the end of
    the group.

Probably just as well, otherwise Valentine and Peter would make sock
accounts and employ USENET to take over the world. Unless the
organleggers got them first. Or they failed to jack out before the black
ICE came. Or the Thread fell through the skylight and ate their router.
Or (as seems more likely, in these odd and dismal days) the New Father Christmas caught them both on the stairs.

I'm on reddit, but I don't discuss SF there. I use it for a few other
things, but I don't read it on any regular basis.

I've looked at a some SF web forums, but their traffic isn't much
better than here. Certainly nothing like the glory days.

The beauty of usenet was always a fairly small set of groups, when
considered on a topic basis, with a way to get all the possible groups
your server had and be able to select the ones that looked likely.

    'just fine'?

We're not full of people throwing shit at everybody else. Maybe it's
a low bar, but it's better than the fate of a lot of groups.

How many regular posters are there compared to 5 years ago? 10? 20?

A lot fewer, obviously. Probably two orders of magnitude fewer.

    ObMontyPython: "We're not dead yet!"

    But are we getting better?

Two that I know of.  Me and somebody else who I am not going to out.

Kinda hard to know, nobody uses their real names.  But one person
here uses his moniker there also.

The amount of messages going across is amazing.

I have yet to look for Fortran, C, and C++ forums on reddit. I suspect
    that they are there somewhere.
