• Episode 1101

From Bart Fargo@21:1/5 to All on Tue Apr 11 14:21:19 2017
    Wow.

I never thought I would type those letters in that order, at least not in reference to MST3K.

I was thinking about it earlier today and in the intervening years I've consumed Mike and Kevin's books, Cinematic Titanic, Rifftrax and all the other ancillary projects.

I went to a Master Pancake live show with Mary Jo Pehl as a guest.

I started seeking out other bad movie podcasts: How Did This Get Made, We Hate Movies, The Flop House.

I spent last Sunday riffing Super Inframan and eating pizza with friends.

My life is so much more than it was in 1999, but still at the core there's MST3K. It always has been and it always will be.

Anyway the first new episode drops for Kickstarter backers tonight, so I will post my reactions in a few hours. I mean I'm going to spoil it now and say I'm probably going to love it.

But still I thought I'd go ahead and get the glory of the first post. Sometimes it's worth waiting nearly two decades for a joke.

I would also offer up Medium Popcorn (as long as you have a decent

Not to spoil anything, but 1101 was perfection.

Everything the old show was only this time it's in high definition.

...and there are 13 more episodes where that came from. Hot damn.

Does anyone know if they plan to eventually release the new MST3K
    episodes on DVD or Blu-ray?

I was strongly considering signing up for Netflix just to watch the
new episodes, but then Comcast did their "Watchathon" week which
included free Netflix and I realized that 99% of their content is
either stuff I have absolutely no interest in watching or have already
seen a dozen times. I'm really annoyed that they didn't have
"Watchathon" one week later to overlap with the new MST3Ks.

Maybe once all the new MST3Ks are available, I'll sign up for the one
month Netflix trial membership, watch 'em all and then drop it. But
if the epsiodes are eventually going to come out on physical discs,
    I'll buy those instead.

You could tell they put a lot of work into it, and it paid off! I'm not sure if they've ever riffed "quick-cutting" as well as this. (Does anyone know if the director went on to work on DANISH MUSIC VIDEOS? :-)).

At least a couple of people from the old show are involved (PAUL CHAPLIN got a writing credit!) Does anyone have a comprehensive list?

That woman at the beginning looked familiar -- eventually I realized she was Erin Gray, and I had seen her at one of the GATEWAY CONs (St. Louis)! Perhaps she was MSTified around that time :-).

    So until IMDB is updated:

    Head writer:
Elliott Kalan (The Daily Show, The Flop House)

    Written by:
    Harold Buchholz (Producer)
    Paul Chaplin (MST3K Vet)
Storm Diconstanzo (LearningTown, Dispicable Me 2)
Tammy Golden (Couldn't find anything, sorry Tammy)
    Dan Harmon (Community, Harmontown)

Joel Hodgson (Never heard of him)
    Lesley Kinzel (former editor: xojane.com)
    Matt Oswalt (All That!)
    Jonah Ray (Nerdist, Jonah Radio)

    Mary Robinson (see Tammy Golden)
    Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty)
Paul Sabourin (Learningtown, Despicable Me 2)
Baron Vaughn (Comedy Bang! Bang!, your local Tom Servo)
Hampton Yount (Eric Andre Show, Ridiculousness and Crooooow!)

So yeah, it's a mix of old and new but Elliott Kalan is a confessed MST3K superfan and host of one of the better bad movie podcasts. It goes without saying the show is in safe hands.

Having seen it and half of Ep. 2, My one complaint is one I've had
with most post-MST3K 1.0 riffing shows: They try and cram every
riff they can think of, regardless of timing or if they flow
together or not. In the two eps so far, they only do it in the
early parts of the movie (that I've noticed) so it hasn't gone past
pet peeve status, but it's there.

Otherwise, yeah. It feels like home. If they moved "home" to the
    moon, at any rate.

I was bothered by the staccato delivery as well, then I ate most of a pizza and washed it down with a nice Belgian style tripel and now I'm cool with it. Funny how that works.

I'm guessing that's the "McGuffin". Naturally there's a big demand for it/them in Hollywood, and the Dark Side of the Moon has some natural deposits... Who knew?

Of course, I could be wrong. In which case, my second guess is, naturally, MEXICAN STOPLIGHT CANDY :-).

I didn't notice it so much in 1102 (Spoiler: Cry Wilderness). Of course, this one is more of a Burroughs-esque assemblange than the proto-music-video feel of Reptilicus. Given how *odd* "Cry Wilderness" was, I wonder if there's a story behind it. If
it were in the Doctor Strange universe, I would say it was happening in the DIORAMA DIMENSION! ;-)

    -Doug Elrod (dre1@cornell.edu)
P.S. Given the way they filmed this, I'm starting to suspect even "DRAGNET".... Maybe the Jack Webb/Harry Morgan scenes really WERE shot in two different studios! :-)

I think the third episode may be the funniest yet of the new series. All the movies have been LAUGHABLE, but I think I laughed more at the *jokes* in this one ;-). And, who knew that John Hoyt had such a lovely decolletage? :-)

The more I think about "The Time Travellers" the more I like it. Varno has an amazing Doug Exeter vibe that makes the whole episode amazing. This is highlighted by the host segment where 'Varno' stops by to talk to Jonah in one of the classic "Let's talk
    to space weirdos" style sketches.
