• THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH

From Bill Anderson@21:1/5 to All on Tue Mar 1 14:39:32 2022
Denzel Washington is quite good in the title role and the other actors
acquit themselves equally well -- except for one in a minor role at the
end, the servant Wheyface, who reads his lines like the high schooler he probably is. But that's appropriate, I guess, as who didn't read Macbeth
    in high school?

I remember not really getting it at the time, even after attending an
art house showing of the Roman Polanski version when I was a little
older. But time has passed and I've grown in experience and the story definitely resonates with me now. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow
creeps in its petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of
recorded time, and all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to
dusty death. Out, out brief candle. Life's but a walking shadow, a poor
player that struts and frets his time upon the stage and then is heard
no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
signifying nothing. Yeah, now I get it.

The movie may or may not win Denzel another Oscar -- though I would not
be surprised if it does -- but it's a lock I think for set design and cinematography. Some of the shots, like Lady Macbeth standing on an
outcrop, were literally breathtaking for me. B&W photography is not yet
    a forgotten art form.

A 10th-grader I know came over to my place to watch FREE GUY this past
weekend. Gamer that he is, it was his kind of movie and he loved it.
When it was over he asked what we were going to do next and I told him I
could take him home or he could stay and watch another movie of my
choosing. "Is it in color?" "Nope." "What's it about?" "It's got lots of fighting and blood and murder and this guy kills the king and takes his
throne and his wife helps but she goes crazy and there are witches who
tell the future and ..." "What's the title?" "Macbeth." "Oh, I'm
supposed to write a paper on that. I'll watch."

He really liked it and I did too. He's also a great fan of Japanese
anime and I've told him I have a samurai movie he's sure to like. "is it
in color?" "Nope." "What's the title?" "Throne of Blood...."

No claims of cultural appropriation here? Strange.

Imagine the howls of fury if a white guy was cast to play Martin Luther
    King.

I guess 'cultural appropriation' is another one of those things that's
only bad when white people do it.

You don't seem to get Shakespeare, just like most other things.
Shakespeare has been done so many times variations in casting have
become commonplace. You're remarkable in that I've never seen anyone
online so happy to air his ignorance. It's Trump-esque.

Oh, were the witches real too? It doesn't make any difference if it was loosely based on history, it's Shakespeare, and it's a feather in the
cap of any actor that tackles it. Are you really too fucking stupid to understand the gist of what I said? I'm thinking you are, actually.

P.S. Did I miss the subsequent complaints about Othello being primarily performed by white guys? Holy balls is this stupid.

Shakespeare was white. This is white culture. For anyone but white
people to play the roles is cultural appropriation.

These are the rules you 'progressives' wanted. Choke on them.
