• ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (no spoilers)

From moviePig@21:1/5 to All on Sun May 21 12:00:32 2023
In 1917, a generation of young Germans eagerly answer their country's
patriotic siren call to visit France amid World War I. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT delivers its familiar anti-war lessons in a beautiful,
violent production that won the Best Foreign Picture Oscar. Even if
that war's primitive underpinnings no longer stand as revelation, the
    candid history remains compelling. Recommended.

It was the original that infuriated the Nazis and that lead to Hollywood hiring a Nazi consultant. What a history.

How did it infuriate the Nazis? By pissing on jingoism?

Immediately after WWI, a common conspiracy theory was that the German army was never defeated and it was the politicians and -- add the usual subjects -- who sold out the Fatherland. This was a die-hard theory and what German audiences saw on screen in
the original film -- before the Nazi-demanded cuts -- drove many of them over the edge. Especially Nazis and especially Goebbels. Showings were smoke bombed and live mice released in the dark theaters. Mobs, riots, the whole deal. Hollywood was losing
money so they cut the film and then they cut a deal with the Nazis.

This prompts me to queue the original, while the new one's fresh.

Make sure it's the restored version.

Easier said than done, it seems. Would that be 132 minutes? ...152?

They're still editing movies to appease groups.
