With her husband overseas fighting The Great War, young PEARL dreams of escaping her demanding parents and squalid life. The musical equivalent
of little horror-flick might be a tone-poem, as it's director Ti West's meticulous ambiance and star (and co-writer) Mia Goth's unique persona
that give this grisly, bucolic hell its grip. Mostly recommended.

Huh? The film is parody and comedy from the first frame. The time setting for the film is 1918, yet, the typeface for the opening credits is clearly a send-up of the 1940s. To boot, the film has a lazy eye toward maintaining the illusion of a time long
It's parody like FAR FROM HEAVEN is parody, but both take swings at
actual pathos. I found it hard to wring comedy from that final shot.

Oh, come on. It's hysterical. Two notes: Where were the flies that must have come off of the pig; and, Mia Goth may have turned in a fine performance, but as a farm girl she was clueless as to how to handle an ax.

allow that PEARL's comic aspects are broader.

As with a 'tone poem', its only "message" is the mood it sets.

What are the other choices, thought provoking depictions of axe murderers?

Umm, 'thought provoking', no. Maybe closer to a Hieronymous Bosch
...i.e., simply celebrating the macabre.
