Today's poem on Penny's Poetry Blog:
To My Sister, by William Wordsworth

It is the first mild day of March:
    Each minute sweeter than before,
The red-breast sings from the tall larch
    That stands beside our door.

Thanks. It is a simple poem expressing a simple thought -- it's the
first good day, let's go for a walk -- and can be read and appreciated
    on those terms.

There's more to the poem than that, as I learned when I was reading
about it before blogging. For one thing, it reflects the ongoing
"nature" vs "civilization" debate that was jumpstarted by the Romantic movement. This poem was published in Lyrical Ballads, the first
important Romantic collection in the UK; and its second part has lines
that sound like a manifesto for those beliefs, such as:

One moment now may give us more
    Than fifty years of reason

So it's more important than it looks. Even so, all that should not get
in the way of appreciating the poem on its own terms.

Thanks. It is a simple poem expressing a simple thought -- it's the

first good day, let's go for a walk -- and can be read and appreciated

    on those terms.

There's more to the poem than that, as I learned when I was reading

about it before blogging. For one thing, it reflects the ongoing

"nature" vs "civilization" debate that was jumpstarted by the Romantic

movement.

Interesting back story on the timely message in the poem.

    Quite so.....

Did you go camping very much, though?

I grew up in the Pine Barrens. There was a three mile long--one mile deep forest behind the house I grew up in.

"Generally, East Coast refers to NYC."
    -- Will Dockery, village idiot

FYI: The Pine Barrens are located on the East Coast, and are as different from NYC as you could possibly imagine.

No argument with that, just as Alabama is different from, say, Atlanta.

Today's poem on Penny's Poetry Blog:
To My Sister, by William Wordsworth

It is the first mild day of March:

The red-breast sings from the tall larch
    That stands beside our door.

As an outdoors man, I find this accurate and enjoyable....

Thanks. It is a simple poem expressing a simple thought -- it's the
first good day, let's go for a walk -- and can be read and appreciated
    on those terms.

There's more to the poem than that, as I learned when I was reading
about it before blogging. For one thing, it reflects the ongoing
"nature" vs "civilization" debate that was jumpstarted by the Romantic
movement.

It is quite lovely on a second read.......

Agreed, kudos to George Dance for reviving these old school classics of poetry.

    QUITE rightly....

    Agreed, and seconded.

Oh give me a home where the folks from Buffalo can roam.... ha ha .....

Be careful with the campfire, though, it seems.

Just don't get out of hand with the camp fire.... it isn't very noticeable...

Exactly, keep the fire small and less noticeable.

    Damn but you're xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Damn, you are one ignorant, bigoted mother fucker, Voodoo Boy...

    Be nice, Zod.

You don't want to sink to Pendragon's low level.

Almost all poetry is obscure to the general public, whether in Columbus Georgia or New York City.
