• Sam Shepard (1943-2017); Jeanne Moreau (1928-2017)

Two cultural icons whose deaths are simply unimaginable.
Jeanne Moreau is France, and Sam Shepard is the United
States of America -- they are meant to live forever. Moreau
is always identified with the French New Wave; my favorites
are _Jules and Jim_ by Truffaut and _The Lovers_ by Louis
Malle. Shepard is perhaps my favorite male actor (alongside
Tony Leung), even if he has always been a strong, taciturn
presence rather than a virtuoso actor. _Days of Heaven_. Volker
Schlondorff's underrated _Homo Faber_, and a perfect cameo
in Almereyda's _Hamlet_ are the most memorable roles, but
so many films are redeemed by a few minutes of the theater
legend. Tobituaries seem to have forgotten the screenplays he
wrote: _Paris, Texas_ also remains one of the greatest films
    of all time.

I have never heard of _Dash and Lily_. I should look for that some time. By the way, you are ruining my illusion that no one reads this newsgroup (which allows me to write whatever I like)! :)
