You know what you get with Paul Thomas Anderson, who has
a very limited intellect. He takes one good idea from
someone else's good movie and absolutely runs it into the
ground. He banks on nostalgia and pastiche. And he is
fixated on boring conversations between two people that
run forever (see the ridiculously overrated _The Master_);
he makes the two-characters-sit-down-and-talk-for-5-minutes
routine of "Game of Thrones" look like the soul of wit.
I streamed the first 20 minutes, get the usual feeling
that PTA is trying to pull wool over my eyes (unlike
true artists who pull the veil away, give you clarity,
penetrating insight). Then I jumped to the Alana-drives-
a-truck scene that NYT critic Manohla Dargis is so fond
of. That scene isn't so bad. But first-time actress
Alana Haim certainly does not deserve all that award
season hype, and someone will have to pay me a fortune
to watch her costar Cooper Hoffman in anything again.
This is far from PTA's most odious film, but let give
it one star just for being ridiculously fawned over
by the critics.
