Bertrand Tavernier just passed away. He was truly an eclectic filmmaker, interested in a diverse range of subject matters and cinematic styles.
More of his films have male protagonists, but the ones with female
leads are just as insightful and powerful. Obituaries have focused on his
more well-known films. _A Sunday in the Country_ is my favorite;
it probably features the best Sabine Azema performance I have ever
seen; the cool aunt/daughter role fits her perfectly. The film
immortalizes Faure's piano quintet as well. I am very fond of
_Daddy Nostalgia_ (despite the horrible English title) and _Life
and Nothing But_. _Death Watch_, another death-haunted film
featuring one of Romy Schneider's last performances, is strangely
overlooked by the obituaries, as is another WWI era film
_Capitaine Conan_, which I need to see again.
