Well ... it shouldn't have.

Most people, including further left and theo-right, do
not understand the diff between 'religion' and 'ethics'.
Ethics are not based on any particular religion, yet
often echoes themes found in many religions involving
how people should behave amongst other people. It is
more a practical philosophy revolving around empathy.

Teaching ethics in the schools WOULD be a good idea.
Alas the left can't tell it from religion (and wants
a level of anarchy so it can be the anarc-kings) and
thus trash any such programs. The theo-right isn't
happy unless ITS religion is jammed down everyone's
throats and will thus help trash ethics ed.

The USA worked pretty well because it was not a
theology-centered republic. However, even since
its beginnings there HAVE been struggles between
holy-warriors and the anti-religious. (atheism
is not anti-religion, anti-religion is politics
like what the USSR did, hands-on oppression
and suppression)
