• [OT] Ottawa unveils national pharmacare plan that covers only two thing

From Rhino@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 29 14:02:01 2024
After months of negotiations, the government is unveiling its national pharmacare plan. It is conspicuously skimpy in its coverage since it
will cover only two things: contraception and diabetes care. Given the
masssive deficits that the government has run since Trudeau became
Prime Minister in 2015, especially since Covid began, the money cupboard
is pretty bare so this is apparently all they can afford right now,
although they intend to expand the coverage to include other
    medications in due course.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ottawa-unveils-pharmacare-program-1.7129439

The NDP has been propping up the Liberal minority government since the
last election in 2021. One of the key demands for their support, was
some form of national pharmacare plan. This particular plan is supposed
to make contraceptives and diabetic medication and supplies completely
free to people who need this things. I'm guessing this was a
precondition of the NDP on whatever plan they put together.

Its not clear if the contraception portion covers women only or both
men and women. Given that the wording of the article omits condoms
entirely, it looks as if they may only be covering women's birth
    control.

Good point! I'm not sure what poison they give you with MAID but it
looks like you have to pay for it yourself. Lots of people have
supplemental health insurance with drug coverage though so it may well
be covered under that - IF you have such a plan. Many do NOT have such

Hopefully Republicans will ban birth control nation wide in order to advance their freedom agenda. Following that, male contraceptives and masturbation will be targets.

You know how Mike Johnson feels about masturbating. Something about a app tracker and spying on his son.

Seems that way to me. As for the other I'm a diabetic and retired just
under two years ago - and spent more than $2000 on pharmaceuticals
this past year. My doctor is trying to get me to wear a 24x7 blood
sugar monitor but have told him I can't afford to do that more than a
week a month given my income is sharply reduced due to retirement.

So I am watching this news item with some interest.

I certainly don't nor did during my working career - we talked about
it but after my parents' retirement they broke my deal with them for
100% ownership (which is what induced me to relocate from Ontario to
BC) and brought my brother as an equal partner (with my paycheck from
day 1 that I had worked for them for 12 years to get)

This was catastrophic for me personally since his wife was a senior
manager (in the $150k+ a year range rising to $240k a year by her
retirement) as provincial IT director for a large crown corporation -
so I knew spending money on 'benefits' wouldn't be on his agenda since
his lady already got a benefits package most average people would kill
for. Neither did he agree to pay increases for the two of us during
the 10 years he was in the business (and still is).

So I saved for retirement (generally did a good job of that) and
    economized...

I wear the Libre 2 GCM

Last year they were $75 a month (two sensors).

This year it was more like $85 but they gave me a 90 day supply. I have no
idea if that was a mistake. I’ll know in about 30 days when it’s time for a refill…

Meanwhile, this month the Walgreens decided I couldn’t have insulin needles anymore. I ordered Chinese knock offs from Amazon. Eight dollars a box
instead of over 50 from Walgreens. We’ll see.

Insulin for seniors is now capped at $35 a month. Under Obama it was $800.

Both insulins I take got the $35 cap last year. But it was closer to $100 before that. It was only under Obamacare that it was pushing $1000 per

NOT an academic question since many diabetics take 2 or more kinds of
insulin - some are lower impact but longer lasting, others are quick

$35 for a typical month's supply of insulin, basically "1 vial". ALL

So then if 2 types of insulin then $70. In Canada they mostly have the

Yeah, 70 bucks for two insulins, and this year the price of the needles for
the pens went way up. And then, either Walgreens or Humana wouldn’t give me enough to fill the prescription anyway and couldn’t explain why. So I got cheap Chinese knock offs that don’t need a prescription directly from
Amazon for, about 1/6 the price as the namebrand. And they’re completely sanitary because they clean them in bat spit.
