• What Did You Watch? 2024-02-17 (Saturday)

    From Ian J. Ball@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 18 08:34:22 2024
I was supposed to be more productive yesterday, but between futzing
around on IMDb, needing a nap, and figuring out how to grade things on
Canvas (this is my main job's new online system), I didn't get as much
    done as I had hoped.

I also didn't watch much TV:

soaps: DOOL - OK, looks like I was right - the shady lady uniformed cop
comes up with some malarkey to trick Tripp and Wendy, and I bet she is
going to hold them hostage. NuTheresa loses it when Alex fails to
propose to her - I like how Alex looked like he had no idea what was
going on!! Sloan is pretty awful, as it's clear she's jealous of Eric's attention to the baby - She's about to go "out" with somebody after Eric
falls asleep. And we finally get Jada laying eyes on Everett! - Either
he's a really good liar, or he legitimately seemed to not know who she
was/not remember her!... Looking forward to Monday on this one.

The Buccaneers (Apple TV+) - Apparently this is set in the 1870s, and if
so it has not a speck or an ounce of "realism" about it! There was lots
and lots here that was unrealistic/wrong, but the most glaring ones were
the poodle dyed pink, and the wedding dress that Alisha Boe wore.
Clearly, this is Apple TV+'s answer to "Bridgerton", right down to
the modern soundtrack (one of those tropes that actually distracts in
cases like this - "Dickinson" could get away with this as it was a
comedy...). Though why anyone would want to emulate "Bridgerton" is
    anyone's guess!!
The headliner here is Kristine Froseth (credited as Kristine
Frøseth), playing Nan, who seems like the quasi-ringleader of a group of
five daughters of the NYC nouveau riche - the others are Boe, Imogen
Waterhouse (from THE OUTPOST!! - she and Froseth, and Christina
Hendricks, are the only reasons I'm watching this!), Aubri Ibrag (who I
am unfamiliar with), and Josie Totah.
This opens with Boe marrying a seemingly reticent Lord (Josh Dylan),
who invites the other 4 girls (and their two mothers) to visit them in
England. Which they do. Christina Hendricks, who plays Froseth's and Waterhouse's mother, wants to "daughter-sell" Waterhouse, playing the
older daughter Virginia, to a Lord or Duke or something, as Froseth's
younger Nan is clearly too much of a handful. When Nan seems to
(accidentally!) sabotage Virginia's chances, in anger Virginia reveals a
dirty little secret about Nan that devastates her. And her mother also
exiles Nan to Cornwall for a week.
Meanwhile, Nan attracts the attention of two men, a rebellious Duke
(Guy Remmers) who wants nothing to do with the other Duchesses and
Ladies around him or his mother's marriage plans, and another Brit dude (Matthew Broome), who seems nice but in fact may be calculating and
conspiring to gold-dig for his impoverished family by seducing rich
    heiress Nan.
This all looks pretty good (though, unlike "Upgrade", the 4k here
doesn't exactly pop). And I like Froseth's performance. But this is
nothing we haven't seen before, and the lack of realism completely takes
    me out of most scenes.
I will stick with this, though, as the revelation about Nan's
character makes this a little more interesting than the show would be
    without it.

Later, I left "The Beach House Murders" on in the background, while I
finished my Canvas grading, but I literally have no idea what happened...

    What did you watch?!

    I watched:

Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (4K disc) Perfect movie with one of the
best scores ever. Movies like this are why I have a home theater!

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (4K disc) Kirk must save Spock while battling Doc Brown and his lawyer from Night Court.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (4K Disc) Kirk uses Doc Brown's time
machine to travel to 1987 where he finds 2 whales and must take them
Back to the Future to save Earth. This was the first Star Trek movie I
saw in the theater. I was living in San Francisco at the time and this
movie just goes down differently if you're a native San Franciscan.
"Set us down there in Golden Gate Park."

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (4K disc) After watching this movie I'm
left with one question. Why does God need a starship? For this one I
turned on the commentary track audio, and listened to a very good
commentary from several Trek insiders. They gave lots of very
interesting making of trivia and didn't hold back on the snark either.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (4K disc) Kirk vs. Klingons.
Loads of fun. One of my favorites. And a great score as well. Signing
their names at the end before the credits roll is icing on the cake.

You should watch GALAXY QUEST next. It’s ending sequence with the rock monster as the ending Shatner wanted for final frontier.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (4K disc) Kirk vs. Klingons.

Ruined by Kim Cattrell. And her nitwit boyfriend.

Loads of fun. One of my favorites. And a great score as well. Signing their names at the end before the credits roll is icing on the cake.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I hate that. They had a different and better ending graphic planned, and I positioned myself to be the one who
pushed the button to start the camera. And then some idiot came up with the signatures, and they scrapped my scene and did that instead. I was “this” close to finally getting official work on Star Trek and shooting the last
scene of real Star Trek ever.

I tried and failed to watch ISS. Like Beekeeper this seems to be a movie

I did manage to watch BYZANTIUM (a borderline incomprehensible vampire flick),

"Byzantium" is a film I have a love-hate relationship with. It's got two
solid performers, and an interesting premise. But the execution leaves a
    lot to be desired.

I feel like "The Moth Diaries" covers similar ground to this a lot better...

as well as SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS, both because they featured Christine
Marzano, a very attractive actress I had just seen on ANGER MANAGEMENT. I really need to find a better way to pick movies.

It looks like she's barely in it... (Helena Mattsson too!!)

If you have to pick one, go with Beekeeper. It's a solid turn your

going on!! Sloan is pretty awful, as it's clear she's jealous of Eric's
attention to the baby - She's about to go "out" with somebody after Eric >>> falls asleep. And we finally get Jada laying eyes on Everett! - Either
he's a really good liar, or he legitimately seemed to not know who she
was/not remember her!... Looking forward to Monday on this one.

The Buccaneers (Apple TV+) - Apparently this is set in the 1870s, and if >>> so it has not a speck or an ounce of "realism" about it! There was lots
and lots here that was unrealistic/wrong, but the most glaring ones were >>> the poodle dyed pink, and the wedding dress that Alisha Boe wore.
Clearly, this is Apple TV+'s answer to "Bridgerton", right down to >>> the modern soundtrack (one of those tropes that actually distracts in
cases like this - "Dickinson" could get away with this as it was a
comedy...). Though why anyone would want to emulate "Bridgerton" is
    anyone's guess!!

I didn't get past the first episode or two, but someone clearing
    watching and enjoying it.

The headliner here is Kristine Froseth (credited as Kristine
Frøseth), playing Nan, who seems like the quasi-ringleader of a group of >>> five daughters of the NYC nouveau riche - the others are Boe, Imogen
Waterhouse (from THE OUTPOST!! - she and Froseth, and Christina
Hendricks, are the only reasons I'm watching this!), Aubri Ibrag (who I
am unfamiliar with), and Josie Totah.
This opens with Boe marrying a seemingly reticent Lord (Josh Dylan), >>> who invites the other 4 girls (and their two mothers) to visit them in
England. Which they do. Christina Hendricks, who plays Froseth's and
Waterhouse's mother, wants to "daughter-sell" Waterhouse, playing the
older daughter Virginia, to a Lord or Duke or something, as Froseth's
younger Nan is clearly too much of a handful. When Nan seems to
(accidentally!) sabotage Virginia's chances, in anger Virginia reveals a >>> dirty little secret about Nan that devastates her. And her mother also
exiles Nan to Cornwall for a week.
Meanwhile, Nan attracts the attention of two men, a rebellious Duke >>> (Guy Remmers) who wants nothing to do with the other Duchesses and
Ladies around him or his mother's marriage plans, and another Brit dude
(Matthew Broome), who seems nice but in fact may be calculating and
conspiring to gold-dig for his impoverished family by seducing rich
    heiress Nan.
This all looks pretty good (though, unlike "Upgrade", the 4k here
doesn't exactly pop). And I like Froseth's performance. But this is
nothing we haven't seen before, and the lack of realism completely takes >>> me out of most scenes.

Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (4K disc) Kirk must save Spock while
battling Doc Brown and his lawyer from Night Court.

With Eddie Murphy as Shatner‘s love interest.

“Hey, they’re on the wrong side of the bridge“

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oltfeDY4X7g

Old school Eddie Murphy talking trek... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbab8qKStzE

You should watch GALAXY QUEST next. It’s ending sequence with the rock monster as the ending Shatner wanted for final frontier.

I'm holding out for a hopeful 4K upgrade before I revisit Galaxy Quest.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (4K disc) Kirk vs. Klingons.

Ruined by Kim Cattrell. And her nitwit boyfriend.

Loads of fun. One of my favorites. And a great score as well. Signing
their names at the end before the credits roll is icing on the cake.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I hate that. They had a different and better ending graphic planned, and I positioned myself to be the one who pushed the button to start the camera. And then some idiot came up with the signatures, and they scrapped my scene and did that instead. I was “this” close to finally getting official work on Star Trek and shooting the last scene of real Star Trek ever.

How would your scene have worked?

If you have to pick one, go with Beekeeper. It's a solid turn your
brain way off and enjoy the ride action flick. ISS is definitely
watchable, but it doesn't have Jason Statham beating the crap out of people.

Wasn't it just awesome how he was punching FBI HRT guys in the head and knocking them out when they were wearing helmets? Not only did his hand

wearing a combat helmet can't save them.

Now that I've finished the series I'm disappointed. It started out well
and had potential as a fun steampunk adventure series but they just
couldn't sustain it. As the show progressed the lack of budget became
painful. The last several episodes were filmed at night with no lights,
one suspects because they had run out of money for lighting. And the

    Heh

    SAVE THE WHALES

Best gags in the movie was sending the guy doing the fake Russian accent
to find the "nuclear wessel", McCoy curing that one woman's kidney failure muttering about the Dark Ages, and naming the whales George & Gracie. I
get that Spock is a touch telepath

Well, he was that first time when he explained it all so meticulously with Simon Van Gelder, but very quickly, he was doing it through walls, through solid rock, through open air.

but would the whales have known the
names the humans had given them?

The other day, a middle-aged black man got on the "L" with a modern boom
box playing it real loud. I still haven't learned the correct way to
    apply the Vulcan neck pinch.

Double dumb ass on you! Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful
    metaphor?

the last scene of real Star Trek ever.

How would your scene have worked?

    A dancing duck. :-)

The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne S1E22 The Book of Knowledge

And it ends on a clip show. Verne has yellow fever and has
hallucinations based on his past adventures. But luckily the guest star
is a doctor who wants Jules' notebook! Oh what a surprise, he's working
    for the League of Darkness.

Now that I've finished the series I'm disappointed. It started out well
and had potential as a fun steampunk adventure series but they just
couldn't sustain it. As the show progressed the lack of budget became >painful. The last several episodes were filmed at night with no lights,
one suspects because they had run out of money for lighting.

    Why didn't they film day-for-night?

I have 5 in my collection. There are 3 (maybe 4) that I plan to watch:

"Little Nicky" - I'm not saying this is a "good" movie, but I haven't
watched it in 20+ years and want to see it again.

"50 First Dates" - I'm not sure how or why I have it in my collection,
but I own it so I'm going to watch it. I saw it once when it first came
out so this will be my second viewing. I don't remember it, but I think
it might have been OK. Anyway, I own it so I'm watching it.

"Click" - Another one that somehow found it's way into my collection. I
only saw it once in the theater. I don't remember it well, so it's
    getting a second viewing.

Punch-Drunk Love - Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It's a
legit good movie. Although I may or may not pair it with the other
Sandler flicks. It's not really a Sandler movie, it's a Paul Thomas
Anderson that Sandler just happens to star in.

Uncut Gems - Written and directed by the Safdie brothers. It's another
legit good movie. Much like Punch-Drunk Love, Sandler just happens to
star in it, but I wouldn't consider it a Sandler movie. I watched it a
couple of years ago, so I'm not planning to revisit it now.

Never saw either one, although I might enjoy Happy Gilmore.

I have 5 in my collection. There are 3 (maybe 4) that I plan to watch:

"Little Nicky" - I'm not saying this is a "good" movie, but I haven't
watched it in 20+ years and want to see it again.

I've seen enough of this to get bored, 10 minutes in or so.

"50 First Dates" - I'm not sure how or why I have it in my collection,
but I own it so I'm going to watch it. I saw it once when it first came
out so this will be my second viewing. I don't remember it, but I think

Hated this, although I did watch it all the way through

"Click" - Another one that somehow found it's way into my collection. I
only saw it once in the theater. I don't remember it well, so it's
    getting a second viewing.

Christopher Walken was in the part of the movie that directly advertised
Bed Bath and Beyond, in the "beyond" section. Now, that retail chain has
    gone into the great beyond.

It was a little imaginitive, I'll grant that, and Sandler's character
    gets punished.

Punch-Drunk Love - Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It's a >legit good movie. Although I may or may not pair it with the other
Sandler flicks. It's not really a Sandler movie, it's a Paul Thomas
Anderson that Sandler just happens to star in.

I just can't get through this. It's not Sandler's fault. His performance
    is decent.

Uncut Gems - Written and directed by the Safdie brothers. It's another
legit good movie. Much like Punch-Drunk Love, Sandler just happens to
star in it, but I wouldn't consider it a Sandler movie. I watched it a >couple of years ago, so I'm not planning to revisit it now.

I was turned off by his medical appointment and the interior of his
colon, which did not belong in a drama if it's not an episode of House
M.D. Maybe I watched another 15 minutes. His character's lies and self destruction were just too much for me.
