People are stupid. Lots of people bought ocean-view cliff-top houses,
and are now stupidly wondering why the cliffs are eroding out from
    under them.

Could be stupidity all round, but given that the kooks claim we'll see substantial sea level rises in our lifetimes and the left-libs in
California swallow that nonsense without question, and it is
ceaselessly babbled-about in the news, you wonder how even a stupid
    person could miss it?

It isn't just individual people either.

Here in New Zealand the idiotis in government and city council have
been busy wasting huge piles of money on an undergrund train system in
Auckland (they can't even run the toy train system they';ve already
got!). At least part of that underground system is built under harbour
land recalimed from the many many years ago. Any sea level rise or bad
storm will flood the railway, making it even more of a waste of time
and money than it already is.

Similarly, the morons in charge have been planning to replace / augment
the existing harbour bridge with a tunnel, which yet again will be
flooded by rising sea levels and bad storms.
