After learning that Slow Horses was a spy show - I previously had no
earthly idea what it was about - I decided to have a look at the first
season. I found myself very pleasantly surprised, particularly by how
crafty Gary Oldman's character actually was, despite the rather
appalling first impressions he left. I was left with a strong
impression of both the writing and his acting. (A bit of research also
revealed that the Will Smith who had a lot to do with the creation of
this show was NOT the American Will Smith we all now.)

I know he's been around a while but I'd never seen him in anything
before. Can anyone more familiar with his work recommend other things
he's been good in? He need not have played a similar character! In
fact, I'm hoping to be impressed by his range in playing very
    dissimilar characters very well ;-)

He's done many things. If you want to see him playing a different
character that is over the top go check the FIFTH ELEMENT. Then for a
spy thriller check out TINKER TAILOR SPY. He's apparently also well
known for his portrayal of Sid Vicious in SID AND NANCY but I can't
comment on it as I've never seen it.  Oh, and he also played in many
of the Batman movies as Jim Gordon.

I was quite impressed with the other Slow Horses too, especially the
ones who had been portrayed as hopeless. They actually stepped up - as
best they could anyway - once the need arose. Of course Cartwright was
very competent and was only in the group because he'd been framed by
Taverner and Web and "Sid" Baker was essentially working undercover in
the unit and was also competent.

I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes. I'll watch Season 2
in the near future and Season 3 when it finishes airing.

On a side note, I was also surprised to hear a very recognizable Mick
Jagger singing the theme song, which he cowrote. I wonder what prompted
him to do a theme song?

Oldman has done a lot of great work... but nothing quite compares to
Drexl in True Romance, the best Tarantino movie that wasn't a Tarantino movie.

Well he wrote the script which is at least as important as the director.
Hollywood from the golden age on never seemed to take as much stock in
the writing as they should have in my opinion.

Especially since the Oscars became more inclusive (10 Best Pictures?)
the Screenplay nominations are the ones to mine for good flicks.
