• [OT] Alberta premier announces measures re pronouns and "gender-affirmi

From Rhino@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 1 17:05:42 2024
Alberta's premier (Americans: think "governor") Danielle Smith
announced new policies with regards to use of pronouns in schools and
the availability of "top and bottom surgery" to minors:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVpckGmEZFw [3 minutes]

She is also taking measures to stop men from competing against wommen
    in sports.

Predictably, the media piled on with "activists" denouncing the
    changes.

Here's the CBC's breathless reaction, complete with comments from a "trans-activist":

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRjg9WoBeL8 [9 minutes]

Alberta isn't the first province to announce measures like this. New
Brunswick and Saskatchewan announced some of the same measures last
    year.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the inevitable court
    challenge.

Wow, a small candle of light in the darkness of Canadidian politics!

Wow, a small candle of light in the darkness of Canadidian politics!

Naturally, all our "progressive" betters are deeply concerned about
Premier Smith's plans, including Trudeau, openly gay cabinet ministers
and their allies in the MSM. The Conservatives have apparently decided
not to comment at all, presumably for fear of being tarred
as transphobes. I'd love to see some polling on this because I feel
sure a large majority support Smith's plans. At least, that's what Adam
Zivo, the only MSM commentator I've read so far who was openly
    favourable towards Smith's announcement says:

    https://nationalpost.com/opinion/calm-down-canada-albertas-new-gender-policies-appear-quite-sensible

I really hope this finally emboldens all the sensible people in this
country to stop self-censoring and cheer enthusiastically and publicly
at this demonstration of common sense. Maybe we can get some momentum
instead of all walking on eggshells for fear of being demonized....

The government of Alberta is "known" to be the most conservative in
Canada (myself I'd give that 'crown' to the government of Quebec on
the subject of the French language and culture - and they somehow seem
to offend both Jews and Muslims on a semi-regular basis) so if you
gave me a synopsis of this legislation (which isn't legislation but
only a trial balloon that the Premier may or may not introduce some
time in the next six months) many Canadians would assume it WAS actual legislation from Alberta - which it isn't.

My own opinion is that it's as likely to reach the legislative floor
as Trump is to build a wall should he somehow see the White House
    again.

This item was discussed in detail on this morning's edition of CBC
Radio's "The House" (which is primarily about the House of Commons but regularly covers provincial matters) and can be heard online at. This
episode also includes sound bites from Premier Smith

    https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-64-the-house

Again - it's a trial balloon - not actual legislation.
