Hitchhiker's Guide babel fish or Star Trek Universal Translator, either
    way it's sort-of due for 2017 (it requires a smartphone) ...

Earpiece translates foreign language in real time
    -------------------------------------------------
Imagine travelling to any city in the world and being able
to understand the language. This could be the reality for
    all of us soon.

Imagine a world without language barriers. This could be
closer to reality than we think, according to brilliant
    start-up Waverly Labs. (http://www.waverlylabs.com/)

Their genius device, the Pilot, is the world¹s first smart
earpiece which, according to the website, has the ability
to translate between users speaking different languages.

The device, available in three colours, will revolutionise
the way we communicate with others, as well as completely
change the way we are able to travel.

While the device may sounds similar to fans of
Hitchhiker¹s Guide to the Galaxy, this is the first time
a real life Babel fish has been made available to the
    general public.

The earpiece will retail for $299 and will include a
second earpiece, which will be connected to a mobile app
allowing the user to toggle between languages.

Additional download packs will be available to allow the
    device access to various languages.

The device is available to pre-order now, but both the
app and the device won¹t be available for purchase as a
    complete package until 2017.

We think it¹s well worth the wait.

for a given value of real and time and no guarantee of accuracy, I am reminded less of the Babel fish and more of Monty Python's Hungarian Phrasebook:
