with him... maybe a little of both?
    1. first, it's SURPRISE when he walks into the campaign office of
    Palantine
    2. second, it's a slight TURN ON when he seems like an out-going guy
with balls. how many guys have the guts
to approach a girl and say all that romantic stuff and ask a girl out
on a date? she feels flattered. Also, she's tired of being
    around geeks like Albert Brooks.
    3. third, it's CURIOSITY as he says some eccentric and weirdass
things, at least to someone like her who prolly grew in safe white
suburb or gentrified parts of city.
    4. fourth, it's a bit of SYMPATHY as he seems to be so devoted to her--
as a goddess unappreciated by the cold decaying city.
    5. fifth, it's SHOCK when he takes her to a porno and reveals himself
to be a socially inept moron and weirdo.
    6. sixth, it's DISGUST at him and even herself that she was foolish to
go out with a loser creep like him.
    7. seventh, it's FEAR when he keeps calling and stalking her like an obsessive psycho.
That's just about the gist of it if we go by schrader's screenplay,
but scorsese tagged an ending where they meet again at the end. I
found this scene unconvincing, but the implication is that she
reassessed him after his notoriety as vigilante hero. It could mean
she's just turned on by famous men--palantine or bickle. Or, it could
mean she finally understood why he asked her out and showed so much
concernr: on some level, he was trying to save her too.
