• Looking for Historian Commentaries on Historical Films

From Evelyn Leeper@21:1/5 to All on Mon Sep 20 20:27:24 2021
I'm a history junkie, and love historian (or participant) commentaries on DVDs of historical films. Examples I think are particularly good include THIRTEEN DAYS (Nikita Krushchev's son is one of the people on the commentary), GETTYSBURG (James McPherson)
, and APOLLO 13 (James Lovell). The HBO "Rome" series also has a text commentary by an historian.

Can anyone point me to any others?

We have about a dozen books about history on film; what I was looking for were commentaries on DVDs. But thanks for pointing out ones newer than what we have.

Check out the Alec Guinness, BBC production of "Tinker Tailor Soldier
Spy." There is an interesting commentary by John Le Carré.

The "mole" in TTSS is based on Kim Philby, one of the notorious
    "Cambridge Five".

Also, British crime film, true story, "Let Him Have It". Audio
Commentary with Director Peter Medak. One of the cases that put an
end to capital punishment in Britain.

Apparently the US edition of the TTSS mini-series is abridged and re-arranged, and I'm not even sure it has the commentary. But thanks for the pointer; I'll have to check some more.

I think we've already seen LET HIM HAVE IT.

I just sent away for the 1979 version from Amazon, and it includes all
the extras on the first disk. There are three.
