• THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951)

If my 17-year-old friend is going to come over here every weekend and
occupy my computer for hours on end playing his games, he has to watch a
good movie with me, and I get to pick the movie. “Bill, do I have to?” “Yes, it’s a rule.” Fortunately he likes a good movie almost as much as he
likes to play computer games, so generally it’s all good.

A couple of years ago I tried to get him to watch THE AFRICAN QUEEN and
after maybe 15 minutes he decided the movie just wasn’t for him and I never understood why. I think it may have had something to do with Humphrey Bogart’s unappealing physical appearance. He just didn’t want to watch a movie starring somebody that ugly. Maybe? I’m still not sure. But today he did remark, “he’s not a handsome man.“ I assured him that nevertheless, Bogart really was one of the greatest movie stars ever. And later we agreed that Katharine Hepburn isn’t exactly a beautiful woman either, but when
they fell in love on the boat they somehow looked great together.

It really is a terrific movie, a brilliant adventure yarn, and when it was
over he agreed that despite the leeches it was great. “It wasn’t GONE WITH THE WIND, but it was really good.“ I’ll take that.

I'm getting a kick out of these stories. Keep it up. Someone will
    remember these movies in future.
