I'm catching up on some of the movies I've missed in the past. I
watched Gattaca on DVD recently. Its a good movie with an original
    concept.
You may continue reading, no spoilers below :-)
Its a story set in the not too distant future. Genetic selection is
used by parents to get superior babies (superior intelligence, looks,
health, free of genetic diseases..etc). Those who are not genetically engineered are discriminated against and are shut out of jobs and
priveledges afforded to those who are. Any establishment can easily
check on your genetic profile with just a few cells from your body
(hair, saliva, blood, urine samples, even a handshake). Our main
character "unfortunately" was born naturally and has to struggle
against all kinds of barriers to make his way in the world & achieve
his dreams. He tries to get around this barrier by masking his
    identity....
I liked the mellow cinematography. The design of the "clean"
post-modern, yet retro look of the future was elegant. Vacuum cleaner salesmen must be doing roaring business. No fancy & unneccessary
sci-fi effects or anything of that sort in the movie.
The movie makes me think of what the insurance companies are doing with
all my information when I have to declare what genetic diseases like
e.g. diabetes, glaucoma..etc my family members might have. For all I
know, there is a permanent record kept some where out of the country,
out of legal jurisdiction... which might be used against me in the
future. A sign of things to come perhaps?
Anyway, that concludes my movie review of Gattaca.
