It’s post-Civil War in the American West and Tom Cruise, a former talented army captain, is now a drunk for reasons that become clear. He gets
recruited to travel to Japan to train the emperor’s troops to fight samurai warriors whose devotion to the old ways is threatening the peace. It turns
out Japanese politics are more complicated than he expected, and when he is captured by the samurai and forced to live with them over the winter months
the story plays out exactly as you know it will. It was a satisfactory diversion on a cross country flight.
