• Twitter vs. Safari

    From Keith F. Lynch@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jan 29 16:04:16 2022
I've never had, or wanted, an account on Twitter or any other
so-called social network. I do enjoy reading several Twitter users.
(I won't say "following," as I think that has a specific meaning that
doesn't apply to anyone without a Twitter account.)

Some time ago, Twitter started requiring JavaScript, making it unusable
from Lynx. I switched to viewing it in Safari.

    Some time later, Twitter placed

    Don't miss what's happening
People on Twitter are the first to know.
    Log in Sign up

at the bottom of my screen whenever I was viewing anything on Twitter,
which was annoying. There was no evident way to make it go away.

More recently, clicking on "Show this thread" stopped working, showing
me a huge pop-up instead. I forget exactly what it said, except that
it was yet another screen nagging me to sign in. Opening the thread
in another tab continued to work, however.

Then, starting yesterday, after I viewed any Twitter account for more
than about a minute, it blocked it with a huge pop-up saying:

    See more Tweets from [user]
When you log in you'll be able to see every Tweet from [user]

Reloading the page worked, but that pop-up reappeared within a few
seconds. Blocking pop-ups in Safari preferences didn't help.

So I downloaded and installed Firefox. That fixed those problems,
but now the top third of the screen is occupied by:

    Search Twitter
    Log in Sign up

And that's my favorite part of the screen, given how I view my laptop
-- on my back, with the computer on my chest, at very close range.
Is there any way to get rid of that message, or at least to relocate
it to the bottom of the screen? Thanks.

Alternatively, is there any way to continue to use Safari for viewing
    Twitter?

Also, is it likely that Twitter will eventually succeed in blocking
people without Twitter accounts from viewing Twitter in Firefox and
all other browsers, given their apparent hostility to everyone outside
    their walled garden? Thanks.

I don't think so; they want people outside the garden to see enough to want
to continue seeing it. They also want the experience outside the garden to
be uncomfortable enough to convince people to come in.

They're also hostile to everyone inside. They'll reach their goal when
they've prevented anyone without an account from accessing Twitter and
they've suspended everyone with an account.

They are mostly online sales, but they do have stores in many places including many west coast places. They are headquartered out of Wisconsin, I think.

For the most part their products are high quality, fresh, and as described although their prices tend also to be a lot higher than the local Indian markets for the same grade of spices. Their spice blends are mostly
peculiar and not interesting, but if you want indonesian cinnamon ground in bulk they are a good choice now that herbspicetea.com is gone.

The problem is that the sane and logical Republicans are frequently
saying things they know are crazy because they believe it's necessary
to say that in order to get elected. I feel like I am living in the
    sixties again.

It took just three days from their blocking Safari to their blocking
Firefox. It happens in the same way. After a minute or so of normal
browsing, it superimposes a giant popup saying:

    See more Tweets from [user]
When you log in you'll be able to see every Tweet from [user]

I've discovered that in both browsers, if I click on "Log in" then
without typing anything click on the back arrow that means return to
the previously viewed page, it returns me to normal browsing. This
apparently lasts as long as I remain on the same page. I do have to
go through it again if I switch to viewing someone else's Twitter feed.

I wonder how long until they block this. Is there some permanent fix
that they can't work around? Thanks.

As of today, for my Firefox configuration, using a "Private Window" will allow you to read a Twitter thread, click on threads, and follow linked threads without annoying popups. Don't know how long that will last.

I just tested it. In less than 2 minutes on a non-private window, I got popups that stopped me from seeing anything further. On a 'Private' window, I got the popup at the bottom that asked me to log in, but which didn't otherwise interfere. I note
that Twitter's behavior is inconsistent from day to day - a few days ago, I had a lengthy run when a normal window allowed me to view feeds and threads like I had been used to a few months back, but then things went back to the unsatisfactory new normal.
