    I apologize in advance if you see this twice. I tried posting the
    question earlier and it seems to me to have disappeared.

    I am fairly sure there is a short-story version of Gordon Dickson's
    novel "The Forever Man". I'd like to find it, but I don't know its
    name or which collection it's in.

    Plot info from fairly early in the story:
    Hero is sent behind enemy lines to escort space ship back to safety.
    Ship was lost so long ago, it seems a miracle the pilot hasn't died
    of old age.

    Additional non-spoiler points that would have jogged my memory:
    "Check 10" to immediately jump to hyperspace.
    Songs and poems in French-Canadian language.

    Thanks. I couldn't find it in my outbox, in my sent folder, nor in my
    rasf folder, so I had no idea what happened. I still don't know what
    happened, but at least it's only a problem on *my* computer.

    I managed to find it. It's The Immortal, which I have in his
    collection Mutants.
