• The Twitter train wreck

From Gary McGath@21:1/5 to All on Fri Dec 16 10:04:54 2022
Elon Musk is systematically making Twitter into a bad joke and showing
he never cared about free speech.

He suspended an account that was giving information about the travels of
his private jet, using publicly available air traffic information. This directly reversed his earlier statement that he wouldn't. To justify it,
he created and retroactively applied a rule that says you can't tweet
anyone's current location without express permission, even using
publicly available sources. This means no real-time coverage of
    speeches, concerts, and so on.

Yesterday Twitter suspended the accounts of many journalists, giving no explanation.

Tweeting a link to most Mastodon servers is now forbidden. If you try,
your tweet is blocked before you can post it.

Many people have been posting Mastodon forwarding addresses in their
profiles. Just a little while ago I updated my profile to say I'm there
just to watch the train wreck, keeping the Mastodon link which was
already in my profile. I could save the change without obfuscating the
link because it was "malware." So now Twitter is engaging in outright
lies and slander to suppress the competition.

Within two weeks, Twitter will be about as important as Myspace.

I noticed that when I followed the link from your Twitter page to your
Liberdon page last night, Twitter warned me that I was about to visit
    an unsafe page.

Within two weeks, Twitter will be about as important as Myspace.

I've long since given up on making predictions about social networks
and other things on the Internet. I never saw the attraction of
Twitter in the first place, hence never got a Twitter account. I
think most people who hang out there do so only because so many
others hang out there. Very likely if everyone could get together
and coordinate the move, everyone would choose to move en masse to
Mastodon. Or to Usenet, if everyone was aware of Usenet and its
    advantages and disadvantages.

Of course even if almost everyone on Twitter chooses to remain there
until a critical mass of others leave first, Twitter could still die
just because Musk has fired the few people who are capable of keeping
    it running.

I successfully tweeted a QR code of a Mastodon link.

That's just too perfect. I'd like to coin "Musk Effect" which is driving yourself into madness with unfettered power over something you're
obsessed with, but which everyone else can dispense with fairly easily.

a rule that says you can't tweet anyone's current location
without express permission, even using publicly available
sources. This means no real-time coverage of speeches, concerts,
    and so on.

Yesterday Twitter suspended the accounts of many journalists,
    giving no explanation.

Tweeting a link to most Mastodon servers is now forbidden. If
you try, your tweet is blocked before you can post it.

Many people have been posting Mastodon forwarding addresses in
their profiles. Just a little while ago I updated my profile to
say I'm there just to watch the train wreck, keeping the
Mastodon link which was already in my profile. I could save the
change without obfuscating the link because it was "malware." So
now Twitter is engaging in outright lies and slander to suppress
    the competition.

Within two weeks, Twitter will be about as important as Myspace.

This is an aside to this discussion.

    I don't have a Twitter account, but I have been getting e-mail
notifications of tweets, most of which have been political
announcements and news headlines, for years. Since shortly
after Musk took over, those have been replaced, almost entirely,
    with titty pics.

That sounds like a significant improvement.

But I wanted the headlines and there weren't that many political
announcements (mostly what V.P. Harris was doing), and I don't
particularly care about the titty pics.

Ah. Elon really did succeed in getting rid of all the unprofessional elements >at Twitter and replacing them with Hardcore Workers.

Well some of the titty pics might be hate porn.

I’ll bet that he never said _when_ he’ll go (in the year 2525, perhaps?), _where_ he goes to (such as, oh, a spot where he could give orders to whoever replaces him) or _how long_ he goes for. Do recall that for a while Putin and his #1 stooge (Donny is merely #2. In many ways.) alternated being president and prime minister of Russia. It would be trivial to find a stooge who will follow orders reliably.
