• Need headshell for Sony Dual turntable.

From John-Del@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jun 11 13:25:45 2019
I have a Sony HP-510A radio/phono with a Dual 1211 that I serviced for minor radio and turntable issues. All is well but when I went to fit a cartridge to replace the missing one, I found that it's missing a piece.

Here's one on ebay that shows what I'm talking about.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-s-Sony-HP-510A-Solid-State-Stereo-Dual-1211-Turntable-MOSTLY-FUNCTIONAL/264193940903?hash=item3d832f9da7:g:ZPcAAOSwJihcY04U

Picture 10 shows a closeup of the headshell. I have the top 1mm, everything below the lift tab is missing. There's a small circuit board at the back where the upper headshell is wired to the tonearm, so I guess the lower headshell allows a quick change.
The lift tab swings so that it appears to be the way the missing mount is held in place.

Can anyone identify the number of the part I need? If anyone has one in their pile I'll consider buying the shell and a cartridge complete if it's known to be good. Thanks.

    John

It is called a "sled" or "carrier".

There are only a few iterations - you may be able to identify it from the pictures.

Except that I don't have it to compare. I did find some shots of the bare tonearm, and it seems like a TK14 might fit. One forum I found says the 14, 15, 24, and 25 are different, but interchangeable...

I also don't know if the Sony HD-510A has a phone preamp or not. I shouldn't have taken this but it's for a good customer. Shame on me also for not noticing the carriage was missing.

    John:

The Dual TTs of that vintage are, as already suggested, largely interchangeable. But, the 14 is the correct vintage/style as would have come with one of Dual's lower-end TTs.

And, yes, that Sony does have a phono pre-amp.

Because I'm sort of a Renaissance man who isn't afraid to show his feelings. Thanks for caring.

I ended up finding a used carrier complete with a cartridge and needle. Unfortunately, the cartridge was a ceramic. This had way too much output so I had to add some resistors to cut back the gain. Had pretty good response with the resistors so I sent
it home. Customer said it sounds great...

Well, your end-user is not very concerned about the vinyl, for sure. Ah, well.

They are new owners to it. I don't know if it was given to them or if they bought it at a yard sale. They had records stored for years and just wanted to play them. IMO, the turntable sounded about as good as the FM.

This Sony isn't particularly good sounding in any case.

I suspect that if this wasn't repairable, they would have bought one of those "reproductions" from QVC. I've repaired a few of those and they really do sound like crap.
